Economy and state - your path to a sound understanding of economic policy
In an increasingly complex world, the interactions between the economy and the state play a central role. You will learn how economic systems of order are shaped and maintained, what role constitutions and democratic principles play in this and how modern tax and financial policy influences the national budget. This certificate provides you with in-depth knowledge that will enable you to act confidently in politics, administration, consulting or business.
Order theory and constitutional economics: Understanding the basics of economic policy management
In the first part of the certificate, you will deal with the regulatory theory of the Freiburg School. You will learn how regulatory principles, such as the competitive order according to Walter Eucken, create the framework for a functioning market economy. You will not only learn about the constituting and regulating principles, but also the role of social policy in this concept of order. You will also receive an introduction to modern constitutional economics, which analyzes political and economic relationships from the perspective of constitutional rules. You will gain an understanding of interdependence costs, the importance of constitutional democracy and the practical implementation of the social market economy in Germany.
Taxation and public finances: skills for a sustainable fiscal policy
An essential part of the certificate is the in-depth study of taxation and tax systems. You will learn about the different objectives of taxation, understand how taxes are levied and how tax burdens can be distributed fairly. In addition to the analysis of efficient consumption and income taxation, a special focus is placed on corporate taxation and international tax competition, topics that are becoming increasingly important in the globalized economy.
Finally, you will deal with the challenges of public finances: you will learn how public debt develops, which theoretical models, such as Ricardian equivalence or dynamic debt models, play a role and how rating agencies and sovereign debt crises, such as the European debt crisis, influence fiscal policy.
